“Live your passion. What does that mean, anyway? It means that when you get up for work every morning, every single morning, you are pumped because you get to talk about or work with or do the thing that interests you the most in the world. You don’t live for vacations because you don’t need a break from what you’re doing—working, playing, and relaxing are one and the same. You don’t even pay attention to how many hours you’re working because to you, it’s not really work. You’re making money, but you’d do whatever it is you’re doing for free.” As an avid reader and self-development junkie, I read a whole lot of different personal development books. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I've read my share of business books. Gary Vaynerchuk's "Crush It!" really stands out as original, entertaining, and useful. It's part business, part self-improvement, part memoir. One of the biggest reasons to listen to what Gary has to say is that he actually does what he teaches. Instead of being one of those teachers that teaches because they can't do, he built his businesses and became successful before writing about how to do it. He is passionate about what he does and that really comes through in his writing. It starts to rub of on you as you read and by the end of the book (or much sooner) you feel ready to dive in and start making a living do what you love. In Crush It, Gary teaches the reader that it is possible to earn income and make a living doing what you love. No matter what your passion is, he is convinced (and is quite convincing) that with the power of the internet, social media and a lot of hustle, you can build a career doing something you love. Gary Vee, as he is sometimes referred to, has been a businessman his entire life. He started with a lemonade stand, which he franchised out to friends, rolling through the neighborhood on his Big Wheels, collecting dough. He moved on to selling baseball cards, earning more money at 10 than a lot of people twice his age. We're talking thousands of dollars a weekend! Later on, as a teenager, he worked in his parent's liquor store after school. When he came of age Gary started using his entrepreneurial skills to take his family business from a local wine business to an industry leader. Gary launched the website for Wine Library in 1997. In 2006 he launched Wine Library TV, a web show series in which Gary talked about and reviewed wine. His success grew exponentially from there and he's gone on to become a bit of a celebrity. He currently runs a huge media company, VaynerMedia. In his book Crush It, Gary teaches you how to harness the internet to build a personal brand and business. He motivates you to quit working a job you hate and start feeling like you're not working at all, because when you're doing what you love, it certainly doesn't feel like work. Pick up a copy today and learn to Crush It! You'll be glad you did.

It took about 30 super cool and successful people saying that The War of Art by Steven Pressfield is a must read before I finally got a copy. It took another handful of recommendations before I actually read it. Very glad I finally beat my resistance (inside joke) to reading this masterpiece.
Some points I got out of it:
A couple of my favorite quotes from the book: “Never forget: This very moment, we can change our lives. There never was a moment, and never will be, when we are without the power to alter our destiny. This second, we can turn the tables on Resistance. This second, we can sit down and do our work.” “The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there is no such thing as a fearless warrior or a dread-free artist.” This is a short and powerful book that anyone trying to do creative work should read. Fight the resistance! Read this great book.

The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco might just be the best damn business book ever. It's certainly the top one I've read. I'm definitely not alone in my praise of this book, it has 897 Reviews on Amazon at the time of writing. Here's just a handful of the reviews: "The best book on acquiring wealth ever written..." ~ Amazon reader review "I loved this book. It is dripping in authenticity and real-world experience. From the first, authentic page I was hooked. MJ DeMarco not only has created a book that motivates like nothing else I have read, he also provides the most important thing: a true framework for evaluating business decisions. It's safe to say that had I absorbed this book 10 years ago, I would be at least $100k-$200k richer today." ~ Amazon reader review "...this book delivers much wisdom about business, money, and the creation of wealth. I have already had my first "liquidation event" and what this author says about how to get there is rock-solid truth." ~ Amazon reader review "Not since Think and Grow Rich have I been as impressed with a book on the subject of wealth and success. Mr. DeMarco writes from a common, no-nonsense approach on how to become wealthy." ~ Amazon reader review "Although the title and cover of the book make you think "infomercial for suckers", it's actually THE single best book I have read on this subject so far (and I've read plenty). I don't typically write reviews on books I purchase here on Amazon, but this one was so good that it compelled me to actually get off my lazy butt and post up a review. " ~ Amazon reader review "If you want to get "rich" while you're young enough to enjoy it, read this book ...it short-circuits you though a lot of the BS." ~ Amazon reader review "I wholeheartedly recommend this book. I have read many finance books (Rich Dad, Cramer, Dave Ramsey, etc) and after reading The Millionaire Fastlane, I kept saying to myself "finally, someone who tells it like it is and isn't feeding me BS!" ~ Amazon reader review "In life, there are people who get it, and people who don't get it. When it comes to building wealth, MJ DeMarco gets it. What really made my jaw drop about this book, however, was his brutal honesty. He exposes many of the misconceptions of the common wealth building 'gurus'..." ~ Amazon reader review
MJ isn't a typical "guru", in fact, you might call him an anti-guru. He is a guy who made his millions doing what he teaches, not teaching how to make millions. If you look at most business gurus, you'll find a lot of them made/make most of their money teaching other people how to make money. MJ became a millionaire young building businesses long before he ever decided to write a book about it.
The Millionaire Fastlane is a no bullshit guide to building wealth through solid, tested, principles. It's a book I'm extremely glad I discovered and read, and I plan to read many more times. The book points out that most people are in the "slow lane." This the plan where you go to school and get a degree, work for 40+ years while saving and scrimping, and then get to enjoy being "rich" when you're old and retired. This life plan has been drilled into most of our societies' citizens. Besides the fact that waiting to enjoy your wealth when you're old (if you make it to old age) is a really stupid plan, this path is built for a time that doesn't exist anymore. We're not in the industrial age where people worked for the same company their whole life and then got a pension. We live in the age of the most opportunity the world has ever seen. We just have to shift out mindset from the old ways of thinking and we can start to see the abundance of opportunity there is in the world today. The Millionaire Fastlane will help you make that mindset shift. It will also teach you fundamental business and wealth principles that you need to succeed in today's environment. One of the coolest things about The Millionaire Fastlane isn't even the book, it's the community that has been built around it mainly on the forum at thefastlaneforum.com. This community of entrepreneurs is full of great people offering value and wisdom that can be astonishing. It is a fucking GOLDMINE. You can get real, no fluff advice from real millionaires and successful businesspeople. Read the book, and stop by the forum, you'll be glad you did. |
